The Judds: A Story of Family, Faith & Harmony
Before Wynonna became a solo legend, she was one-half of the beloved mother-daughter duo, The Judds, alongside her mother, Naomi Judd. Their story is as deeply rooted in Kentucky as the hills of their childhood.
Born in Ashland, Kentucky, Wynonna and Naomi’s journey began with humble beginnings. After moving to Tennessee, Naomi—a single mother—worked as a nurse while dreaming of a music career. Their hard work paid off when The Judds signed their first record deal in the early 1980s, catapulting them to stardom.
Their signature harmonies and timeless storytelling led to a string of 14 No. 1 hits, five Grammy Awards, and a place among the most influential duos in country music history. Songs like:
"Mama He's Crazy" – Their first No. 1 hit, proving their magic from the start.
"Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout the Good Old Days)" – A nostalgic ballad that captured the hearts of a generation.
"Love Can Build a Bridge" – A song of unity and hope, written by Naomi as a message of strength.
The Judds' music wasn’t just about melody—it was about family, faith, and overcoming life’s hardships, themes that resonated deeply with fans across the world.
The Judds’ connection to Ashland, Kentucky, remains a cherished part of their legacy. One of their memorable performances took place at our historic Paramount Arts Center, a venue that has hosted some of the greatest artists in country music. Their presence on that stage cemented a deep bond between The Judds and the people of Ashland, a bond that we continue to honor today.
To celebrate this legacy, we have dedicated Judd Stage at Broadway Square, ensuring that their music and influence remain a permanent part of our community’s story. This stage stands as a tribute to their impact—not just in Kentucky, but in the hearts of fans everywhere.
Wynonna: A Voice That Can’t Be Tamed
After Naomi’s battle with hepatitis C forced The Judds to retire from performing in 1991, Wynonna embarked on a bold and unstoppable solo career. Her deep, soulful voice set her apart, blending country with rock, blues, and gospel influences that showcased her powerhouse vocals.
Her solo debut album in 1992 was a smash hit, featuring:
"No One Else on Earth" – A fiery anthem of love and independence.
"She Is His Only Need" – Her first No. 1 hit as a solo artist.
"I Saw the Light" – A song that showcased her powerful, gospel-infused vocals.
Through triumphs and trials, Wynonna has remained a force of nature—a woman who never backs down, never loses faith, and always sings from the soul.
